Common Questions

What is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics refers to a flexible, multi-technological approach in the integration of Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics, and Information Sciences.

It is an interdisciplinary high-tech field of knowledge. The word was invented about 25 years ago in Japan. It combined mechanics, electronics, and computing fields. It is more prevalent in Germany and the German education system of technical training. In Germany it is spelled Mechatronik.

Where can I get a Mechatronics training?

Through TechReadySC, a student can apply and obtain a Mechatronics certificate or an Associates Degree in any of the five Upstate technical colleges: Greenville Technical College, Spartanburg Community College, Piedmont Technical College, Tri-County Technical College and York Technical College. All five technical colleges offer the same standardized Mechatronics Technology curriculum program.

What jobs could I get if I went into this field?

High tech careers are available in advanced manufacturing and high level Mechatronics maintenance positions including robotics.

How important are math skills to my ability to succeed in the field of mechatronics?

It is important to have a working knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry to be successful in both the Mechatronics Technology curriculum and industry work.

When do classes start?

The Mechatronics program began in the Fall of 2008 at all five technical and community colleges: Greenville Technical College, Spartanburg Community College, Piedmont Technical College, Tri-County Technical College and York Technical College.

These Advanced Mechatronics courses are currently being created by the five Upstate colleges and will be offered in the fall of 2012:

  • Predictive and Preventive Maintenance (45 hours)
  • Siemens Advanced Controls/PLCs (40 hours)

  • Allen Bradley Advanced Controls/PLCs (40 hours)

  • Advanced Robotics Programming course (15 hours)

  • Robotic Preventative & Mechanical course (30 hours)

  • Troubleshooting (15 hours)

  • Network/IT Connectivity  (30 hours)
